Chamonix - Zermatt

The Most Famous Ski Tour in the World

The Chamonix-Zermatt high-level route swathes a path through the high mountains of the central Alpine chain, using dramatic glaciers and mountain passes, to link the two most famous mountain towns.

Warm up and Training Day Included

This course is spread over 7 days, with 5 nights spent staying in mountain huts during the traverse (spread over 6 days). The first day will be used for a training and warm up tour near Chamonix. This allows us chance to warm up our ski legs and make sure everything is set ready for our big departure. This day can also act as a buffer, allowing us to start the tour one day earlier if the weather forecast demands, so increasing our chances of completing the entire route.

The Experience of a Lifetime +

The scenery is incredible with every day offering something completely new. The skiing is also fantastic, with most days offering some fun descent to enjoy. The plan will be to ski the most popular version through Verbier, allowing us some extra flexibility and the use of the lifts there, so increasing our ski to skin ratio. I’ve often found that we can arrive at the refuges with time to spare. This means that the keener members of the team can come back out and enjoy some extra skiing with me. I love skiing just as much as you!

The final day crosses 3 high cols and provides 2500m of fantastic downhill skiing to enjoy, with the descent beneath the shadow of the Matterhorn being something you will never forget. There really are few better ski days to enjoy!

Pre-requisites

This is a long traverse, with 7 touring days in a row. That said easier days do often follow harder ones, giving some chance for recovery. It is still important that you can climb about 800m / day (1200m max) for consecutive days. Your skiing level should be good intermediate and you should be able to handle any off-piste snow, safely and efficiently. This will include being able to at least sideslip safely on firm 38 degree terrain, as well as stem turning in breakable crust. Ski touring experience is essential and mountaineering experience is helpful. Mountaineering training will be provided throughout the course of the week.

John was super professional but also fun. We did a few days before plus the haute route of ski touring. Always felt confident and he was always happy to spend time teaching us about planning and not just blindly following a guide.

I would happily (and probably will) go touring with him again.
