The European Alps were formed just two million years ago and there’s been five ice ages since then, shaping and modelling the iconic mountains we see today. The remnants of these ice ages now lie in the form the grand glaciers found in the high mountains. This is where the history of mountaineering began back in the 1800s.
These mountains remain the proving ground for mountaineers today and to gaze out from any one of their pointy summits, knowing what you’ve put in to reach it, is still as exhilarating as it ever was. Seeing the glaciers bathed in a rich alpenglow and feeling the crunch of the firm snow beneath your feet will give you a warm, lasting glow inside and leave you hungry for more.
Needless to say alpinism takes on many different forms and difficulties, meaning there’s something for everyone:
If you’d like to take your first steps on these glaciers and walk up some alpine summits, I’d love to be there.
